PLAYOFF UPDATE
EPIC ENDING
Two evenly matched teams. Two stellar goalies. A first time championship on the line. Overtime. The 2012-2013 UNYCHL Finals had all of this and more. The best game of the year was saved for the biggest game of the year. Geneseo and Canton played back and forth, hard hitting hockey for 60 minutes, then had to play another 7 minutes plus to decide it. In the end, the Cinderella run of Geneseo fell just short as Corey Spuck scored his 3rd goal of the game 7:23 seconds into overtime to give Canton their first ever UNYCHL Championship by a 5-4 margin.
Canton goalie Fraser Carson made several stellar saves in the game, as did his counterpart for Geneseo, Tyler Sherman. Geneseo had what looked like the game winner in OT disallowed, the referees stating that Carson had covered the puck and was pushed into the net after the whistle. A short time later Spuck ended the game.
Geneseo trailed 1-0 after one period and scored with 9 seconds left in the 2nd to cut the deficit to 2-1. In the 3rd Canton struck twice after Geneseo had tied it to take a 4-2 lead. In what has become Geneseo's standard of play, they worked relentlessly, scoring twice later in the 3rd to send the game to OT. Geneseo's line of Brent Sanderson, Kyle Kelschenbach and John Fitts, who had 10 goals in 3 playoff games, led the Geneseo charge to tie the game. But the play of Spuck, Cody Ross and Brett Jacobsen countered for the eventual winners.
CARSON NAMED MVP
Canton goalie Fraser Carson was voted playoff MVP by Commissioner Andy Musto, backstopping his team to its first ever championship.
ABOUT US
Well a long season has come to an end. Congratulations to Canton on winning the championship and to Geneseo for a great unlikely run to the finals. Both teams played their best and left everything on the ice.
Thank you to all the teams and their coaches who made this season so fantastic. It was closer than I had imagined it would be, from the regular season to the playoffs. What a way to start a new era for the UNYCHL!
We look forward to next year with the possibility of adding new teams.
To everyone have a safe, happy offseason. Keep checking the website from time to time as new developments will be posted here as soon as they occur.
From Tim and I we thank you for your hard work and dedication in making the UNYCHL one of the top leagues in New York State!!
Andy Musto
Commissioner
The UNYCHL was founded in 2006 by Andy Musto as a place for club hockey teams to play in a league with minimal cost. The UNYCHL does not feel that high costs are needed to run a competitive club hockey league. The league started with 6 teams and is now up to fourteen, with further expansion possible.
OUR VISION
To create a club hockey league at minimal cost to the teams involved while maintaining a high level of competition through sportsmanship, teamwork and league wide camaraderie. It is also our goal to assist schools interested in starting a club hockey team.
